My bearings have escaped my mind
And my torch is slowly fading.
Separated from my guide
Nothing left inside my mind
But dread of facing mammoth cave alone!

I cant just wait here
I must get out!
My visions starting to return!
I could not help to think
My fate would be starving
I let out a desperate scream
With hope my guide would hear my cries!
Fearing Now!
That I wont escape!
As I hear unmanlike footsteps
My cries have attracted some ravenous beast!
I became fucking silenced, by fear
But I thought, this may be better than starvation
No! I must arm myself, but all I could find
Was stones from the labyrinths, limestone floor!
The hideous pattering of the paws drew near
It sounded like a quadruped, advancing in the dark
The tension in my brain was strong, completely frozen in place
The fear spell broke as I hurled the limestone toward the beast!
In the cave….
I nearly hit my mark!
I heard the beast dodge the stone and stop dead in the silence!
I saw this as my only chance so I whipped the second limestone shard!
Wounded! Gasping! Silenced!
“After rendering the creature unconscious or dead, I ran, oh I ran
and eventually found the light of my guide!
I cried at their feet, pouring out my terrible story.
I convinced the group to follow to the place of confrontation.
On the floor was a white anthropoid, ape of large proportions.
Just as the guide shined his light and raised his pistol,
all at once a fleeting spasm of energy past through the frame of the beast!
With a jerk it turned toward us and I was horrified by the deep,
jetty black eye sockets and pale white hair and flesh.
It spat out unrecognizable, grotesque speech and relaxed in death! …
The fear left, and the wonder, awe, compassion and reverence succeeded in its place, for the sounds uttered by the stricken figure that lay stretched out on the limestone had told us the awesome truth. The creature I had killed, the strange beast of the unfathomed cave, was, or had at one time been a man!”
